A Twist of Poe Series: Reporter Jesse Stone and CSI Deputy Dal Starr investigate the mystery of the bones dug up by dogs. Who took the skull and why?
At the scene of the crime, Jessie Stone and new deputy Dal Starr lock horns. Immediately attracted to one another, they battle over her involvement in the investigation.
They finally decide to work together as Dal uses his special powers to contact the spirits of those involved in the violent crime. Though Jessie says that's crap, she can't help being attracted to the handsome Cherokee lawman.
Suspects include someone on the city council and a man who lives in a cave. When Jessie begins to receive threatening notes she sets out to find the one who is sending them and puts herself in grave danger.
Can Dal get there in time to save her from the one who stole the skull?
Excerpt
An odd prickling sensation lifted the hairs on the back of Dal’s neck. Whatever else this was, it wasn’t a crime scene. The body had been carried in. Dead. By someone scared out of their wits. A woman, possibly two. Their terror lingered like the stench of a long ago forest fire.
He’d best keep that to himself for now. A reporter hanging around the scene of a crime was a definite no-no in his book. And playing house with the law, even worse. No telling what kind of story she would concoct if she knew too much about his methods. This being his first case on a new job, he wanted to do everything right. Reporters told lies when the truth would do. He had good reason not to trust any of them, and held a deep resentment for the stories they concocted with so little remorse.
It was not so easy to ignore this one. She was country pretty in her jeans and crisp white shirt, streaky blonde hair tied back with a blue scarf, and brown eyes splashed with gold so in certain light they looked like cat eyes. Smooth skin free of makeup except for a bit of pink on her lips. Though she was afraid of him, she had the guts to sneer at that fear. Once again he damned the visions handed down to him by his Cherokee grandfather. He did not welcome communing with the spirits of the dead. Most especially those who had suffered and longed for rest. They could not go to their rest without wreaking vengeance. His head was filled with their pleas. Yet, it was worse to catch a thread of thought from the living, as he often did.
