Jide," Lola began as they entered the early morning rush hour traffic, "I don't know what to do anymore. Olu is not the same. I know that he tries to act as though nothing has happened, but I feel that he is not happy; he tries too hard to please me," Lola said sadly as her friend watched the road, trying to choose his words carefully.
"Lola, my friend, I have known Olu for many years. Since Janice left, I have been observing the two of you. I can see that things are not going well. I intend to speak to Olu when I get a chance. He is always busy these days. He seems to be lost inside himself."
"I know, Jide, and I have done everything in my power to bring him back to me. I have failed miserably." Lola's pretty face changed into a tearful one as they reached her office. I don't know how much longer I can take this, Jide." Her friend patted her on the back, trying to console her.
"Cheer up, Lola. All is not lost yet. Olu is here in Nigeria with you, and that shows that he loves you." Lola blew her nose delicately on her handkerchief and wiped her eyes.
"I hope that is enough Jide, but lately I don't think it is." She got out of the car, adjusted her cotton wrapper, and walked into the office. She had returned to work after Janice left. Olu was seldom at home, and when he was, he was often lost in his own thoughts. She needed something to keep her busy, so she decided to return to her job at the Ministry of External Affairs as a secretary to Alhaji Mohammed Yaro. The situation between Lola and her boss was better now, but Lola knew he would still jump at the chance to have an affair with her if he could. She entered her office and prepared tea for him as he joined her at her desk.
"Sonnu, Lola, how are you today?"
"I am as well as can be expected, sir." She served him the tea in his office and went back to sort out his messages and mail. Sitting back, she remembered the day that she opened the letter from her husband, telling her that he had married another woman. Her eyes took on a whimsical air as she tried to remove the horror of that moment from memory. The day went slowly as she tried to concentrate on one task after another. Alhaji noticed her distraction and asked her to come into his office for a chat. He looked at his secretary with concern.
"Lola, is everything alright between you and your husband? You know that I care about you and want to help in any way." She looked down at her hands and spoke softly, "Sir, my husband is not yet over the fact that his other wife returned to America."
Alhaji Mohammed Yaro listened intently as his secretary explained all the troubles she had convincing her husband that she was woman enough for him. "Lola, you can never erase that woman from your husband's mind. It's like poison without any antidote."
"Sir, I have to try," she said passionately. "I cannot lose him again." Alhaji reached out for her hand. "Lola, do not go on blaming yourself for this situation; you need to try to find happiness any way ou can. Remember, you only live once, so don't waste your youth and beauty trying to change a situation that you cannot." Lola stood up, thanking her boss for his advice. She knew that she loved Olu and nothing and one one could ever change that. When the workday was over, Jide picked her up and took her to the house in Surulere. Lola was quiet, thinking about her
life.
