Mama Bear and Papa Bear have hired a babysitter for their baby, SugarPaw, while they go out for the evening. SugarPaw, like many children, doesn’t think he needs a babysitter. But Papa Bear ignores his pleas and insists that Bonnie Whiskers is the best babysitter in town.

A very unhappy SugarPaw decides he’ll change the rules chart that shows how late he can watch TV, what his bedtime is, and things like that. He doesn’t know that Bonnie Whiskers has already seen the chart.

After his parents leave, SugarPaw gets into one kind of mischief after another, hoping, I think, that Bonnie Whiskers will never want to baby-sit him again. Nope, I’m not telling you what he does. Let’s just say that he’s every babysitter’s nightmare. Even the naughtiest of children, including SugarPaw, can have a change of heart, however. Kevin Scott Collier’s illustrations add the perfect touch to a delightful story.

A neat twist at the end made me smile. Combine an unhappy little bear and a clever babysitter and you end up with a fun read. Babysitters will be nodding at SugarPaw’s antics, perhaps recognizing him in some of the children they’ve sat with. And young readers will giggle as SugarPaw does his mischief. Perhaps they’ll also think twice about being a troublemaker when they have a babysitter, especially if she’s a good one like Bonnie Whiskers.

Ms. Grenier’s sense of humor sparkles in this picture book. I recommend the book for parents, children, and everyone who enjoys a good laugh and a little bear with a big heart.

Have you ever babysat a child, and if so do you remember the very first time? Bonnie Whiskers has never babysat SugarPaw for the Bear family before. While standing ready to knock on the door, she hears SugarPaw cry out, "Don't Go," and it makes her worry. SugarPaw does not want a babysitter and is very unhappy. When Bonnie goes into the kitchen to see Mother Bear, she notices a rule chart for SugarPaw on the wall and thinks that maybe it won't be too hard. But when Mama Bear and Bonnie leave the kitchen, SugarPaw sneaks into the kitchen and changes some of the rules. What is going to happen? Will SugarPaw and Bonnie hit it off or not?

Anyone who has ever done babysitting will be able to empathize with Bonnie and her plight. For that matter, so will anyone who has ever been babysat! Author VS Grenier has created a tender, heartwarming story that children will enjoy having read to them and that parents will enjoy reading to them. Babysitting SugarPaw should bring back a lot of fond, and perhaps a few not-so-fond, memories for both former babysitters and former children who were babysat. After all, what would we parents do without babysitters?
