Wagon travelers heading west have to contend with many difficulties. Lack of food and water, difficult terrain and bad weather are ever-present worries. There are vast plains, wide rivers and high mountains that need to be crossed. There are all sorts of obstacles that have to be planned for and eventually dealt with, but a passel of Indian warriors descending on your wagon-train in war paint all whooping and hollering tends to be a much more immediate concern. At any rate that's how it seemed to me as I sat on my horse watching the horrific scene unfold in the valley below.
I knew the smart thing would be to backtrack and then go around, avoiding the danger. In order to clear my name I’d still have to find that Chip fellow, and riding smack into an Indian attack wasn’t the smartest or safest way to do that. I pushed my hat back and shook my head.
