Calvin came to me as a terminally ill foster child when he was two years old. From the beginning, I was determined to adopt him, to fight his life's battle with him, and to be with him for as long as he lived. I hoped to give him a secure, safe, loving family to nurture, love and protect him. What I never anticipated was how Calvin's life would change me forever.

During the month he was sick I often took him to bed with me to save getting up to check on him, and after that he would sometimes come to my room in the middle of the night, asking, “Night-night mommy, pwease?” With his many fears and phobias, he always gave me the impression that he was afraid to grow up, afraid of life and what the wider world might hold for him.
