Excerpt
Shortly after getting KFC drive through to eat on the way home, Brent began explaining what had happened at the restaurant, and Alyssa's skin "goosed" up.
“You know what makes the whole thing so scary?” she asked.
“What?” He responded, taking a big bite from a drumstick.
“While my boss was digging through the drawers of his desk, I thought I saw a rustle in the curtains behind him.”
“Curtains?” Brent asked trying to remember something as he placed the drumstick back in the box and wiped his hands on his jeans..
“Black curtains?” He remembered peering from darkness.
“Yes.” Alyssa was really afraid now. “How did you know that, Brent?”
“There was someone in there with him.”
Brent slammed on the breaks and spun the truck around to head back into town.
“Brent!” Alyssa shouted nearly spilling her drink into the floor, being held in herself only by the seat belt.
“What are you doing?”
“He wasn't after you!” He shouted back at her, causing a tiny vein to pop up on his forehead. “There was someone else in there with him. I could feel the terror!”
“Brent. If one of them is bad enough how are we gonna handle more than one of them!”
“Weren't you listening?!” He shouted, scarcely capable of breathing as he could visualize the killer pinching this woman until she bruised.
Alyssa shrunk back into the corner of her seat. She'd never seen him like this, and she didn't know if she could stand it.
“There was a woman in there with him. He has already done some things to her, because I could feel his pleasure, and her anguish. If we hurry, we might keep her alive. It's highly unlikely he would kill her in the back of the office like that with all of that commotion I made.”
Alyssa sat up, finally understanding him. She reached into the glove box, pulled out Brent's pistol, and with the adjacent box of bullets, began loading it.
She cast only a single nervous glance over at him before putting the gun into her lap and lifting the speaking portion of the C.B.
She radioed police, and the two of them, being closer to the restaurant, knew they were the only ones with enough time to stand between this woman and certain death.
Brent squawled tires as the truck slid sideways into the parking lot of the restaurant.
The customers who had been there when he came the first time, stood up and asked for their checks, while the others just sat and stared with distant curiosity.
Alyssa's boss, Frawley ran to the entrance with both arms out trying to keep them from passing, but Brent cast him aside as he made his way back toward the office.
Alyssa was close behind, stopping only to show Frawley the gun she had hidden beneath her jean jacket before continuing to follow Brent to the back office.
Frawley ran after them clamoring like a clumsy child, and when they reached the office everything fell silent.
Alyssa stood with the gun pointed at the opening point of the curtain, and Brent snatched it open. Only a small pool of blood remained.
“Oh my God!” Alyssa screamed. “Frawley call for an ambulance. Brent and I will split up and see if we can find...”
She was cut short by a scream, immediately interrupted by a loud thud.
“He's out back!” Brent shouted. “Frawley!” He nodded to the elder man, pointing at Alyssa. “Keep her here!”
Brent pushed her onto him as he snatched the gun from her. Frawley immediately grabbed her up into his arms.
Brent ran from the office as fast as his feet could carry him, and Lyssie struggled to break free of Frawley's grip. She just had to go with Brent. What if something happened to him?
She finally managed to kick her boss hard in the shin, (her trademark death move), and ran for the back door.
As the door flung open to reveal the night-darkened street, Alyssa had to force herself not to vomit with the rancid smell that permeated the alleyway.
She covered her mouth and nose with her hand and stepped into the darkness just in time to hear two shots.
Her eyes jerked to where the shots came from, and Brent's shadow materialized, running with the gun drawn after a monstrously huge man, now no more than a silhouette against the dark, himself.
This hulking figure dropped what might have been a child's plaything, had it been any smaller… then he rounded the corner and slunk away into the night.
Lyssie could barely see Brent as he ran, but she could see him lose all of his fervor as he slid to his knees in front of the body that the thing had dropped.
Brent screamed.
“No!” he cried, clinching his fists to his chest, and then let his head droop in defeat as he began sobbing.
Alyssa started toward him, but his head snapped back up before she could get to him. He gently shook the figure on the ground.
Brent's shadowed head turned toward Lyssie in the dark, and she heard him shout.
“Hurry and help me... she's still alive!”
