White Summer Dresses
to feel once more the strength of youth
and its mindless disregard for the future
to run in crimson fields of sweet clover
to follow heart, sacrifice all freely to love
unencumbered by untried intellect’s reason
stand in summer storm unafraid of thunder
not chilled by cold rain on hot afternoons
to sleep again that unburdened slumber
known only by innocence undisturbed
in waking heart of a mystic woman child
to gaze into the crystal ball of infinity
and steadfastly envision only the gift
of freedom tied in bright ribbons of hope
too little lived to find much sorrow in
to trust again and not despair of truth
nor justice within depths of human hearts
to be that uncomplicated girl once more
if only in dreams and memories clouded
by the fog of heartaches and knowledge
to live those times again, innocent days
of pink nail polish on unwrinkled hands
and gossamer white summer dresses
As I read the poem it reminded me of my own childhood in much northern climes. But when I got to the end of the description that my toenails were more likely covered with mud rather than pink nail polish. ;-)
