There were several dolls I found in the attic. These became my playmates since there were no other children living close enough to play with. The dolls were over a hundred fifty years old. Their long dresses were faded, their faces dirty and marked. The dolls and an old one eyed, tabby cat with a deformed face who drooled spit, were all I had.
It was obvious the cat had been injured in the face and I wondered who could have been so cruel. I loved that old cat and I didn't mind the drool that fell on me when I would hold him on my lap. I would ask him who did this horrible thing to him and sometimes I could almost swear I heard him meow a name. I could never understand the name but I hoped someday I would.
When Mama would call me in the house for supper, she'd ask, "Whata you doin out there on the steps?"
"Pettin the cat."
"Lorna, I told you a hundred times there aint no damn cat”
I wouldn't dispute Mama, nobody disputed Mama. I just held back the tears and held my tongue. I knew my cat was real even if I was the only one who could see him
