Fantasy with Rivets!
I'd like to comment that THE SPIRIT GATE is more than just a traditional "mage-in-training" fantasy. The summary line is from an interview I did with Starlog and was coined by the reporter to describe my fantasies. Since most of my short fiction is science fiction, I suppose it should be no surprise that my fantasies have a pragmatic bent. TSG is a book of political intrigue, mystery, and deals with magic in what I hope is a fresh way. Dragon Magazine calls the magic in TSG "an intriguing construct, at once traditional yet distinctive" and goes on to say that, "Bohnhoff's attention to details of history, character, and magic make this novel stand out." The novel uses a fantasy setting to explore issues of prejudice, intolerance, and the nature and effects of power. A warning: I've been told THE SPIRIT GATE keeps folks up late.

Bohnhoff’s attention to details of history, character and magic makes this book stand out.
Science Fiction Chronicle
Bohnhoff takes what might have been a fairly standard fantasy tale off in unexpected directions, in what is without doubt her most successful book to date.
