"We won't be any trouble, Eric, and we won't get in the way. You won't even know we're there!"
"I'll know, Kristie." He flung out an arm to emphasize his statement. "Hell, every time I turn around, I'll have to save you from the clutches of some overeager young stud!"
"Oh, really, Eric. Don't you think you're over-reacting just a little bit?" She neglected to mention the fact that she had told Charity nearly the same thing only two days earlier.
"No, I'm not over-reacting! If you traveled with the army, the men would immediately assume you were another Prudence Whitman! You wouldn't last a day in the company of four-hundred sex-starved men and, if I tried to interfere, I'd have a mutiny on my hands!"
Kristie's brittle sapphire gaze spit daggers. "The mutiny of four-hundred men wouldn't begin to compare to the wrath of this one woman if you ever mention my name in the same breath as Prudence Whitman's again!"
The moonlight lit the challenge in his dark eyes. "I think you would find that you had met your match in me."
"Well, we'll never know if you don't let me go with you, now will we!"
"No, Kristie!"
"And give me one good reason why not!"
"I just gave you four-hundred good reasons, and here's number four-hundred-and-one!"
