Tabibzadeh tells the tale of Husrō and Shirin in a practiced, polished manner, capturing the poetry of this ancient story and its worldliness. This novel is the translation of beautiful epic verses originally written by Nizami, the famous Persian poet, in the 5th century. It is based on a true love story that rivals Romeo and Juliette and is sweeter than any romance ever written. Excerpts like,

deluge readers in the breathtaking imagery of the culture.
Husrō -Parviz, the son of the Hormozd Shah, is a prodigious talent with many skills both physical and mental. Parviz’s youthful irresponsibility leads to his father punishing him and causing him to lose his royal position.
Later, the crown prince is visited in a dream by his grandfather, who shares with him a prophecy: “Since you ate sour grapes and did not turn sour, you will find a lover who is sweeter than any woman in the world. Since the Shah gave your throne away, you will have the throne of the Persian kingdom.”
Parviz soon learns that the first part of the prophecy is within his grasp: the lover is to be Shirin, the beautiful niece of the Shah of Armenia. Parviz dispatches a servant to bring Shirin to the Persian capital, but a misunderstanding with his father causes the Shah to seek Parviz’s arrest. The prince flees Persia all while the woman of his dreams travels to his home to meet him.
As Parviz and Shirin traverse the world, forever seeking each other, wars are fought, and kingdoms rise and fall. Parviz, however, never forgets his destiny: to become a great emperor of the Sassanid Dynasty and to have the beautiful Shirin as his queen.
Maryam Tabibzadeh is a bilingual author who has published short stories and fiction including Persian Dreams and Danger of Love. She is a member of the University of North Carolina Persian Program Advisory Committee, and the North Carolina Writers' Network. She is also a regular lecturer of Persian history and literature at the North Carolina Art Center and the ICSNC of Raleigh. She currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband of 41 years. She enjoys walking, gardening, and arranging flowers.
