I swear, sometimes you can just see it coming. You go to a bar and there's a band playing and the guitar player's just wailing away and you're thinking, "Man, this guy...This guy's going somewhere..." Or you rent a movie like Pi and the whole time you're telling yourself, "Well, here's a director with a hell of a future..." Or you start doing reviews for one of the best horror zines on the web, and there are those books that make you think, "Man, this person...This person is going somewhere..." ...Add to that list one Greg F. Gifune.
HERETICS is Mr. Gifune's latest short story collection, a follow-up to last year's DOWN TO SLEEP. And as much as I liked his earlier effort, this one is even better...
Yes, like I said before, sometimes you can just see it coming. And it's always fun to watch. Later on you can tell everyone, "Man, I was there when..." So take my advice: read HERETICS and keep on eye out for Greg Gifune's writing in the future. Because this guy...This guy is definitely going somewhere...

I picked up HERETICS with more than a little reluctance, as due to the graphic nature of Keith Minnion's arresting cover art, the book bears a strong resemblance to the plethora of less than stellar small press books that have crossed my desk in recent years. For such books, the eye-catching covers are often the best part of the package, and the contents are easily dismissed. HERETICS stands out from this unsavory crowd, however, containing several well-wrought stories from the pen of Greg Gifune, who, as Brian Hopkins accurately notes in his perceptive introduction, seems to be somewhat of a throwback to the so-called "old school" of writing, a writer who cares more about craft than attracting attention. As Hopkins notes, some evidence of this lies in the low profile Gifune keeps, but the most direct demonstration is in the quality of Gifune's stories...Based on the positive experience I had with HERETICS, I'd pick up another Gifune book without hesitation.
