Shasta Garland, poet and novelist, embarks on a quest with a new mystery story featuring detectives from Peoples Investigations, who are caught in a web of role-playing wizards inhabiting the astral zone. The Garlands become entangled with others who are on their own path of self-discovery and renewal. Rafé Courbet, exploring her cultural roots, blends Native American storytelling with magical routines. Excerpt

Down deep I [Ralph Garland] knew remote viewing was the journey that would change my life, the one leading me to the philosopher’s stone. . . .
Once I learned to flow into my still point and merge into silence, I was ready to learn the choreography of distant viewing. . . .
The design, which I developed and has given me success, constructs a mental mansion with twelve houses or rooms. Each room has its own furnishings which I have learned. I start the remote viewing session by getting into a meditative state and emerging into silence. When I am ready, I walk through the rooms, beginning with the first one. The natal chart has the houses in their sequence formed into a circle. I continue my journey until I reach a room that has a bright light, the illuminating icon. It is the house that links to the distant viewing site. In the room I find an object to focus on. Then I perceive the remote viewing site and its contents. It’s like I’m there, totally there, seeing it from all directions in the round. . . .
I was in the third room and saw the illuminator. The room was brightly lit, yet something was wrong. I could sense an anomaly. I inspected the room carefully. All the furnishings were present and in their proper location. But what? I moved around the room examining the walls for anything missing or new. Then I went over to the window. Streetlights glowed, shining on several parked cars. No pedestrians. All was silent.
I turned and walked toward the middle of the room. An aha struck me. That was it. An eerie silence pervaded the room. But why not? The rooms never had any sounds. Silence always presided. A difference I couldn’t explain was noticeable now.
Another thought caught my attention. Why am I here? I don’t remember being at the Institute nor given an assignment.
I moved back to the window. The scene hadn’t changed. Suddenly, a brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the street. I waited. The thunder’s roar–where was it? Again another flash and another, yet silence remained. Dumbfounded, I turned. The door into the central room was closed. As I walked toward it, I glanced to my right and stopped, startled. The wall had an open archway leading into another room. Automatically, I climbed to the archway. Pausing, I looked back, noticing the floor sloped downward. Room three was receding from view. I felt slightly faint. I stepped through the archway into the room, which should be room four, but it wasn’t. Or room four had changed completely. The room wasn’t illuminated by its focal point. A central area was lit, and the remainder in darkness.
I quickly strode into the center of light, sensing a strangeness. Glancing around, attempting to penetrate the darkness for lurking danger, I stood in the light. I felt an emptiness. Stepping to the edge of the light, I peered into the darkness, letting my eyes adjust to the gloom. Revolving in a full circle, I realized the room was bare of furnishings. No furniture, no wall hangings, no decorations of any kind. It was empty.
I looked up at the light source but was blinded by its brightness. So the room had one fixture, a light overhead. I felt something touch the back of my neck. I jumped. Panicked. Seeing the end of a rope, I pulled it and a ladder descended. Without thinking, I ascended the ladder. At the top was clear sky, a deep blue night sky. I climbed to a platform under the night sky. Creeping close to the edge, I looked down. Nothing was below and only sky above. The platform was floating in space. I was puzzled. I could stay here, perhaps indefinitely, or jump into unknown darkness. An aha brought a grin to my face. I would fly and travel, seeking adventures in new worlds.
Blinded by a brilliant lightning bolt, I nearly fell off but clung to the edge, as a loud thunder-roar shook the platform. Another light followed by a roar. I thought of Thunderbird, a very special spirit being for many Native Americans. And its opposite, Underwater Serpent.
Gnosis flooded my soul. I leaped from the platform and flew. An immense sensation of calm guided my maneuvers. I soared and dipped and glided into the beams of a waxing gibbous moon.
With eagle’s sight I spied below a pond reflecting dancing moonbeams. I dove toward it and deftly landed beside tranquil waters. An ancient wood bench was at the water’s edge. I sat and breathed in fresh invigorating air. Bliss sat beside me and we embraced.
Hearing a rustling, rattling sound, I looked for the source. A small house, its door ajar, was nearby. Curious, I walked over to the building. Opening the door, I viewed the interior. A lamp sitting on a table lit the room. I entered. My life changed that night. I marveled that my quest succeeded. I discovered myself, a truer part than I had ever known as far back as I could remember. Seated at the table was my double, a happy, gracious Ralph Garland. We talked that night until the rosy fingers of dawn crept over the horizon. He knew all I remembered and all I had forgotten. He knew what I kept repressed and behind the doors of denial. He knew it all. He was my truth and I desired to be him. We arose and embraced.
