Excerpt
It was my freshman year of college. I was at registration and needed a three credit course to complete my 16 credit requirement. The problem was that all the courses I searched were closed out. Freshmen were the last to register and all the good classes were taken. At this point I didn’t care what course it was. All I needed was one course! I searched frantically and finally found the ONE course that still had a few openings. What was it? You guessed it. Public speaking!
Satisfied that I was now a full time student with a complete schedule, I didn’t take time to think about what I had just done. I was excited to begin my college journey.
Fast forward to the first day of class. I looked around and saw all these juniors and seniors. Where were the freshmen like me? I felt like a stranger in a strange land. Later, I realized that public speaking was a required course and most students waited until the end of college to sign up. I could deal with that. But now it was time to give the first stand-up presentation. It was a self introduction. I stood up as the professor called my name and sat on the desk in the center of the room. It would anchor me and sitting would be less intimidating. But all of a sudden a wave of anxiety washed over me as I was speaking. I knew it would soon be over and maybe people wouldn’t notice. All of a sudden, as I was wrapping up my speech, I heard a stage whisper from the back of the room. “Look! Her shoulders are shaking.” Somebody did notice.
Well, I wanted to dive under the table. Where does this nervousness thing come from anyway? It was like an entity of its own. I got through the class and received a B. Obviously, I was not a stand out. And if you had told me then that I’d be a professional speaker and executive speech coach, I would have laughed at you.
What I learned from that experience is this: public speaking is a skill. Gifted speakers are born – effective speakers are made. There are those fortunate people who have a natural gift. But most of us will never be a Martin Luther King. What we can and will be are effective communicators.
Anybody can learn the skills of public speaking and be effective at delivering a message that resonates with an audience. But we let fear get in the way. We invite verbal viruses into our minds and let our imaginations run wild with negativity. We create a story of angst and failure and then we act as if it’s true. It’s time to give fear the finger!
