I am the daughter of Eve
Walking along the Motherland's Nile
With my head held high for all to see and admire
My beautiful queenliness.
I am the daughter of Eve
The mother of all living
With my rich earth-toned skin
Emulated by others, but unique in its own way.
I am the daughter of Eve
So fruitful
As evident by suckling babes
I'm raising warriors
To walk their future in my own footsteps.
I am the daughter of Eve
Walking beside my mate
In a wifely state
And essential to the existence of all.
I am the daughter of Eve
Leaving my legacy of life
For those who will come behind
And carry on my strength and beauty.
I am the daughter of Eve
Giving life to others
As they remember my inner strength
The core of my being
I am the daughter of Eve
Walking in my mother's footsteps
Guiding and assisting posterity
As we follow the ways of the Creator.

Standing on my mother's shoulders

Poetry for all moods…
Vocal Moments by Vickie M. Oliver-Lawson is a diverse collection of poetry that touches on an array of emotions and themes. The compilation starts with a bang featuring a number of selections that touch on identity and integrity matters. Her words scream strength and paint a world where our dreams can become reality.
The book is divided into titled sections including Reflections, Love, The
Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Just For Laughs. Each division does as the title promises. For example in A Moment to Savor, the writer ponders an early morning and all the beauty that is inherent in it and just as the poem is about to close the writer humorously pokes fun at herself for being up so early. Lawson also deftly ends the book where she begins – in contemplation. The collection begins with a section entitled Reflections and ends with one entitled Just to Make You Think. The latter is a powerful series of poetic views that chronicle a number of society’s recent ills including the murder of Amadou Diallo, 911, and the Election 0f 2000.
Vocal Moments is a timely and thought-provoking compilation of poetry. Lawson makes you think, laugh, cry, and she motivates you to action.

Vocal Moments
I just finished Vocal Moments by Vickie M.Oliver-Lawson, and felt the desire to share! The book was divided into four sections; Reflections, Love: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Just for Laughs, and To Make You Think.
One of my favorites was Like The River, which spoke of operating out of the box, free, uninhibited, able to flow in many directions. I enjoyed, Soul Food, which offered food for thought. It contained everything from expressions, visuals, metaphors and much more!
Where Dreams Go, dealt with domestic abuse. It also told of the things Mama warned you of, and things found in Scriptures. There were also poems which spoke to social injustices such as Strange Fruit, the story of Amadou Diallo. He was murdered by four policeman who claimed they thought he had a gun.
One poem which saddened me was Ode To Angela, Camell and the Dawson Family. It was a piece about the tragic deaths of a family who dared to speak out against drug dealers in their community. Very skillfully done!

Vocal Moments is an excellent of poetry that touches on a variety of subjects such as self, life, love, women, world, health, spirituality and humor written by Ms. Oliver-Lawson. Some of my favorite poems include “Call Me Woman”, “Daughter of Eve”, “I Am”, “The Urban Warrior Queen” and “Like the River.” From reading her poetry, it is clearly evident that she wrote these poems based on her personal lifestyle and travels through life. This collection of poetry is indeed a book that you want to share with your loved ones.
