The poems in this collection are a treasury of fragile meditations and chipped singing, moments of insight and yearning that are perhaps more beautiful for their sudden and unlikely emergence among stone gray walls. Most of them, are told from the perspective of an alternate (and purely imaginary) sub-scene to William Shakespeare’s Tempest, where after raping Miranda, Caliban is jailed by Prospero. During his incarceration, a slavegirl who shares his fate, falls desperately in love with him. These are the love poems they share during the long nights of their imprisonment.
