The McCauliffe siblings, Dylan, Mike and Sarah, are at it again, caught amid another paranormal frenzy. But this time their challenge is Black Shadow Ridge, one of the most haunted locations in Cincinnati, Ohio. After receiving a mysterious email, Dylan, the equipment expert of the group, and his brother Mike, the researcher, visit a woman who lives near the Gottlieb Place, a haunted venue known for ghosts and an old witch who peers through one of the windows.
On the way to the house, they get spooked by orbs of light and a headless bride. And later, they discover that the land is haunted by hundreds of spirits who roam the field and woods near the house of the woman who hired them. On the day of the investigation, the woman disappears and the teens are left to defend for themselves. They soon discover a mystery surrounding the hauntings which thrusts them into a world of dangerous spirits. And the only way to end the hauntings is to get rid of the witch.
Excerpt
I stood up and walked toward the doorway. Without taking her eyes off mine, mom handed me a stack of pants and shirts that she’d just carried up from the basement. I strode over to the bed and deposited the stack on the bedspread.
“Dylan.”
“We have another job.”
“Oh, good grief. You just finished the Drayson Schoolhouse job yesterday morning. You kids need to take a break from this stuff. It’s not good for your health, especially Sarah’s.”
“I know, but this one pays thirty thousand dollars.”
“What?” Mom’s eyes widened. Her jaw dropped near her shoulders as she placed her hand on her upper chest.
“The woman said she’d pay us thirty grand if we met her needs. But she didn’t say what they were. She also wants me to drive up there and meet her at her house.”
“But you don’t know this person,” mom said. “She may just be some kook. Next thing I know, she and her rustic clan are serving my babies up on dinner plates.”
“Really, mom. You have quite the imagination.”
“Well, it happens, you know.” She frowned.
“I can take care of myself.”
If you knew my mom, you’d realize she was the biggest worrywart in the world. Whether it was a cold, sprained ankle or cut, she’d always think the worst, until the doctor eased her anxiety with a proper diagnosis.
“Okay. But promise me you’ll take Mike with you. I’d feel better about it.”
“All right, I will. I’ll send him in first.”
Mom glanced back and frowned.
“I’m just kidding.”
But thirty grand was no joke. It was more money than I’d ever seen in my life.
I headed back over to the computer and printed the directions to Joann’s place. My printer also spewed out the four-page letter the woman had written. Seconds later, my computer screen blinked several times. The letters on the email suddenly started bouncing around and the message got scrambled. Then I was staring at a blank page.
