He had transfered back to the Mine Sweep fleet eighteen months earlier after a long nine months at Ben Lou. It had been ugly and he hated every day of that miserable duty. His PBR division had lost more than a dozen boats and the Mekong River ran red with the blood of American sailors. He still had a sick feeling in his stomach, and his mind was filled with the explosion of rockets, mortar fire slamming into PBRs, and the charred bodies of sailors and officers floating and burning in the river from ignited fuel, or blown apart by a direct hit.
State side the news media blasted the war and the American fighting men who participated in the engagement. Hippies seemed to rule the day and trampled and burned the American flag to voice their opposition to the US involvement. That was ugly too, and was a part of the legacy he would inherit from the war.
Tom stepped off the pier, momentarily paused, and then turned back. Staring at the fleet anchored in the harbor, and the mine sweepers docked along either side of the pier, he stood at attention, raised his right hand to his brow and gave a farewell salute in honor of his fallen comrades and those sailors whom he knew would once again be called to bare arms in defense of that small nation on the other side of the world.
