This book is a “field guide” to Fantasy Nations based on classroom lessons, research, impressions from personal experience and encounters of the fantastical kind. How'd I get personal experience? Let me explain.

Ancient prophecies foretold Destineers would save the worlds. Yes worlds with an “s”. There’s a lot; you just have to know how to find them. We are Destineers. Well so we've been told.

A new headmaster arrived at our school and life suddenly got very interesting. He brought some new professors and a whole new curriculum with him. I'm not so sure the school board knows about these changes...but school is a LOT more fun since they arrived.

Who are the Destineers? There’s Ryan – he’s 16 and the leader of the group; Sean, his roommate (also 16) who has a great sense of humor (but he loves to play practical jokes so watch out!), and Ryan’s little brother Brady (he’s 9). Brady is awesome. He has this amazing energy and really has a knack with languages. I’m Kylie, I’m 15 and the writer of our group.

Excerpt

One of our classes this year is called Interactive History. Like Ryan says, the professor that teaches this class (Professor Fritz Fitzwilly) is some kind of genius or something. He invented this machine called an incarnation chamber. It lets you travel to any world, at any time in its history. It is amazing. Ryan and Brady really like this video game with knights and dragons and stuff called Cosmic Kingdom – a video game cross with a Camelot type kingdom with a little urban fantasy flavor, okay, they’re kind of obsessed with it….anyway, Professor Derrnz let us travel back to the time of King Arthur to see what life was really like back in Camelot.
We also got to travel to the realm of the Netherscape. That is such a cool place and there are all kinds of fantastical beings like elves, goblins and centaurs live there. Professor Washington, our Mythical Beings teacher, gets very upset if we refer to them as creatures. He says it’s demeaning and disrespectful. Did I mention Professor Washington is a goblin?
The Netherscape is so breath-taking! It is absolutely gorgeous with its rolling hills, snowcapped mountains and the icy hot lavender lava flowing down Mount Mallekhi! We even got to see some fairy herds and a cloudwalker or two. It may be beautiful there, but there is some kind of major trouble brewing in that realm.
Professor Ginger Sinclair (my creative writing teacher) gave me this extraordinary journal to keep a written chronicle of our lessons, events and adventures. I am proud to keep the journals of our adventures and lessons and to share them with you. The beings described in the Fantasy Nations section of the journal have all been reported to have lived in our world centuries ago and have deep roots in what we call Mythology and Legends. Throughout the journal I refer to “The Terrane”. This is how the Nations refer to our world. Their last appearances in our world (for most of these beings) date back to the time when the “Old Ways” were predominant in human culture. When the Old Ways disappeared, these Nations of Fantasy were forced into a realm of their own. Many of the nations discussed in this journal currently live in the Netherscape. Further details of the legendary tales can be found in the Journal of Legendary Wonderments. The following pages are a “field guide” to the Nations of Fantasy based on class-room lessons and, ummm… impressions from personal experience and encounters of the fantastical kind. I’ve arranged it alphabetically to try to make it easier to reference.
