After Michael changed, they left the theater, totally oblivious of how life was about to change. Michael woke up the next morning to the phone ringing. David came out of the bathroom and picked up the phone.
“Yes he is, just a moment.”
He handed Michael the phone.
“Hello,” he said in a rough voice.
It was Marcus Huston, the company’s Ballet Master.
“Michael, I have some terrible news to tell you.”
“What is it Marcus?”
“Margo is dead.”
There was silence.
“What happened?” Michael managed to say.
“I just spoke to the detective and he has determined that it was an accident. Apparently a ladder fell onto some scaffolding holding up a portion of the set, which fell over, catching an electrical wire and pulled down a track of lighting. They found Margo underneath the pile of lights. She was killed instantly. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Michael,” said Marcus.
“Wow, I don’t know what to say Marcus,” Michael said blankly.
“I’ve decided to call off tonight’s performance. Sara will fill in tomorrow night, but she just told me yesterday that she needed to take a leave of absence, as her mother has a terminal illness. I will make some phone calls and see who might be available,” said Marcus.
“Thanks for calling, Marcus,” Michael said and hung up the phone feeling dumbfounded.
Michael knew he had nothing to do with Margo’s death, but still felt guilty about the things he said the night before. After talking with David, he reasoned that he was probably just one of many people who had similar thoughts about Margo.
“My guess is at least 4 or 5 hundred other people hated her as much as you did,” said David.
“Thanks David, I almost feel better,” he said as he poured himself a drink.
