Though the Bible clearly maintains that everyone will suffer hardships, How short is life, and how full of trouble!—Job 14:1 (NLT), there are wilderness moments that are both unique and common to women with the capacity to elicit a unique yet common response from women. The Bible also asserts that [men and] women don't live by bread only; we live by every word that comes from God's mouth (Deuteronomy 8:3, The Message) and although that passage refers to manna, God’s culinary choice for the Israelites, it also served as a declaration of His provisional promise. Manna was that promise in a tangible form, to equip and assist them during their forty-year trek throughout the wilderness. God’s faithfulness to His own still exists and is evident when we triumph—modern day manna—despite adversity and many times while we’re right in the midst of our own wilderness experiences. Manna was considered strange, foreign and had never before been seen or sampled by the Israelite people or anyone they knew—the reason they named it manna which means, “What is it?” (See Exodus 16:15) When God provides for us in a way that is new and doesn’t come packaged in the designer label we expect to see or a brand that we recognize; when we have no point of reference for this new thing and it doesn’t come to us in vast supply, but is doled out in measured and limited portions, we’re equally as inclined to inquire…what IS this, Lord?!? But its newness makes it no less of a blessing, on the contrary, more of a blessing and indicative of His favor being directed towards us. What it is, is God’s desire to draw us to Him for answers to our hard questions, for direction so that our lives are in alignment with His will and for fellowship with Him such that He becomes irreplaceable, incomparable and second to none. As mentioned earlier, though manna represents God’s provisional promise in tangible form, it also demonstrated qualities analogous to Jesus Christ: manna was a savior delivering them from the death sentence they imposed upon themselves in the wilderness; manna was sent from heaven to earth and was all the Israelites needed to make the journey from a physical and personal state of slavery to a promised land of freedom; manna was tolerated, but not fully appreciated. What manna was then, Jesus is now. I’m firmly convinced that manna wasn’t as simple a thing as God wanting to try out and introduce a new recipe during the journey, nor was it merely an attempt to pacify the grumbling brood. Instead, it represented immeasurably more. This manna possessed a distinct sustaining power and symbolized a faith-inspiring vow that only God could impart to His people.
