"...Today’s sermon is titled Posture in the Pasture.” He repeats it slowly for those writing or still feverishly trying to locate the scripture, "Posture…in…the Pasture. In all of our lives there comes a season of silence, a time or a place you perceive to be desolate and without hope. A time when you pray and your words seem to bounce off some invisible ceiling only to land right back in your lap without results. But I want to tell you, be neither anxious…nor deceived.”
Looking down and taking careful steps as he adjusts his wireless head microphone, Reverend Hampton moves away from the lectern, “For the Bible tells us that this place or time in our lives—and we’ll call it ‘the pasture’ for now—is ripe with impending harvest. And it serves a very distinct purpose in the plan of God for your life.”
When he pauses, someone calls out, “Take your time, preacher, take your time!”
“Now, a pasture is generally a parcel of land that’s used to graze or feed cattle.” He goes on to explain, “There’s no fancy landscaping, no pretty flowers, no golf course, nothing plush—just the basics. Not a lot of noise, very little distraction there. Actually, it’s a very peaceful place.”
As Reverend Hampton turns toward the crowd, the back of his long, custom-made robe twirls and wraps alongside him. “But even at its basic best, the pasture is part of a larger plan. Each square foot has been meticulously thought out and accounted for to determine the best type of vegetation to be grown for, consumed by and provide nourishment to the livestock. When you’re positioned in your personal pasture, this place of isolation and time of sanctification allows God to have undisturbed, one-on-one time with you, to feed you, build you and prepare you for something upcoming, something greater. In the pasture, where there is no distraction, He has your undivided attention.”
Scanning the faces before him, some with eyes wide, others with eyes losing the battle with the sandman, Reverend Hampton speaks softly, “Some of you may look at a pasture as a form of wilderness but in this instance what appears to be a wilderness is actually a 'Will-to-Him-ness.' He wants you to not only surrender your situation to Him while you’re in the pasture but to expect Him to do the impossible with what looks hopeless.”
