Chapter 10
“My assistant and I have gone through your financial records thoroughly. We've done so several times. We've even had additional financial advisors come behind us to assess our assessment of your finances. And we have no other choice but to declare that you have little to no assets,” Stan Walsh revealed to Thomas. Mr. Walsh had been Thomas' financial advisor for the since the beginning of his career. He was a very nice looking, older black gentleman, slim and tall in stature. Mr. Walsh had been in the business of advising millionaires for decades. With his own private practice, he received many clients as referrals from Gina. He was honest, thorough, direct and effective when it came to consulting his clients. You couldn't have gotten any better than Stan Walsh. Even if you were a professional athlete who played in the league for a short period of time, if you followed Stan's instructions, you would have wealth well into your future. The only way your financial outcome could be in the red, would be if you went completely against his advice. Unfortunately for Thomas, that's exactly what he had done.
“What exactly are you saying Stan?” Thomas asked him in ignorant disbelief.
“Against my counsel, you purchased several homes for your immediate and extended family and friends. You purchased sixteen expensive cars, hundreds of custom suits, apparel and accessories. You have an entourage the size of a college basketball team, all for whom you constantly footed the bill. Be it travel, accommodations, wardrobe, or entertainment, you took it too far. You have been paying child support for
$20,000 a month for the last four years, for a child whose legitimacy you refuse to confirm. You have involved yourself in several failed investments. To further add to this situation, your contract has yet to be renewed. You've been in the league more than ten years, and your career seems to have reached its pinnacle.”
Thomas listened as Stan painfully broke down his financial picture. He could remember when he was a young, eager and vibrant rookie in the NFL. By far he out shined every rookie that season. He was the #1 NFL Draft Pick, he'd won and received a Super Bowl Ring and Pro-Bowl MVP. He had the most beautiful girl on his arm and at that moment, he was on top of the world. What a difference a few years could make.
“Are you sure Stan? I have to have some money somewhere. I've made more than $100 million dollars throughout my career. With my endorsements, contract...I...there…it has to be some money left,” Thomas said as he began to get hysterical.
“Yes, Thomas. Your lifetime earnings to date is estimated at $135 million dollars. But your debt surpasses your income. It doesn't look as though you will receive an exceedingly financially lucrative contract, and the endorsements have dwindled quite a bit.”
Stan tried to be as comforting as he possibly could. Thomas could only sit speechless and bewildered. He was dismayed by what he was hearing. He could only hang is head and think, “How could I have been so irresponsible?”
