Musket balls flew like buzzing bees, ripping the woolen threads of uniforms and marring weathered flesh with bloodstains. Through the choking haze, a Sikh officer stepped over contorted bodies, ignoring the hail of missiles.
His left foot caught fast.
"Let go of my leg," he commanded the upturned ashen face of a Khalsa warrior whose hand clutched his boot.
The soldier held out a paper scrap. "Please take this...Diwan."
Life disappeared from his eyes. The captain read the note, then quickly searched the dead man's pockets. Behind him voices rose in the distance.
"Sufe! Over here! We need you."
Captain Sufe whirled around amid gunfire chatter. One hundred yards away, an infantryman stood with a few survivors, facing the charge of British cavalry. Leaping to his feet, the officer sprinted toward them, swinging a sword in deadly swathes.
