Valerie lost her mother to cancer when she was only seven years old. Now, having just graduated from high school, she finds herself returning to her mother's childhood home, searching for something. While there her aunt finds and gives her her mother's diary and Valerie meets Jeremy-- a person who will change Valerie's life forever. Will Jeremy be able to teach Valerie how to live life and let go of her mother? Or will unforeseen events take him from her life as well?
I sprang to my feet, feeling almost as if my mother’s diary was a snake and it was going to bite me. I piled the two boxes together and bolted for the familiar safety of my room. I lay the diary on my bed, in the middle of the old quilt and sat staring at it, not knowing if I dared to open the cover and not knowing why I was so afraid. Hadn’t I always wanted to know my mother? The night before the prom I had wished that she were there, helping me dress and talking about her prom. All my life I had wished I could have known her better. So why was I sitting on the edge of my bed, with one hand partly stretched out, trembling and afraid?
“This is foolish,” I told myself out loud. “There is no reason in the world for you to be afraid of a little blue book.” Saying that, and forcing myself to believe it, I reached out and took the book in my hands. It was hard covered and about the size of a paperback I would have read in Junior High, if a little thicker. I lifted the cover slowly and found myself face to face with a photograph of my mother.
It was in black and white, though most I had ever seen of her had been in color. She was smiling at the camera, leaning forward on a slim hand. Her eyes were widened as if she had just finished telling the photographer something funny. There was something almost childish in the way she grinned up at me from the page. I hastily turned to the next page and found myself staring at lines of my mother’s small, neat, handwriting.
