Experiences shared by 36 adventuresome women who went to the arctic for work or adventure or accompany their beloved man.

The Arctic has many people spellbound. Few visit, let alone live there, but delight in reading about it. This is a collection of short stories written by 36 women who went there for adventure, a job or because their husband or finance was being transferred. Some went for a short time others spent most of their life there.

They each had some difficulty in coping but their determination to make it work, their love for their family and of the land and friends they made helped them overcome the troubles, they embraced the life their, brought a warmth and gentleness to the otherwise harsh environment.

They wove a social fabric, that lasts today. You may feel you can hear each one's own voice and their love for their life in a beautiful wilderness.

Excerpt

'Suddenly as we watched, the sky exploded with Northern lights in a wild display of bright pink, green and red - whipping across the sky in long perpendicular and swirling motions. They were everywhere at once. We didn't know where to look. We were caught in some magic spell that took us right out of time and place.

'Then with no warning, our peace was broken by the sound of many skidoos coming from behind the hills onto the bay ice below. They drove in wild disarray to become two straight lines and then they paused with their lights on. Another sound pierced the night air and we looked up to see a little plane fly over our heads and glide to a stop between the skidoo headlights.

There was no proper runway with lights, the plane was to take out an Inuit man with a broken leg to a hospital in a town where there was a hospital and the skidoos provided a lighted path for the pilot to land.

Professional Reviews

A Tea Party
'It was like being invited to a tea party of longtime northern friends. The women's voices were genuine'. Anne Crawford, Deputy Minister to the Premier of Nunavut.

Fills a great gap
'Definitely the motivation behind the book was to fill a great gap in Northern literature. One hardly hears of the equally adventurous women who worked here, raised babies here and created homes for their families'. The Yellowknifer Newspaper, NWT

Midwest Book Review
'..a collection of inspirational and evocative anecdotes drawn from a wide variety of women who call the upper latitudes of Canada home. Describing what it is like to work and survive in a frequently cold land during the twentieth century, and offering unforgettable glimpses into the joys and travails of a simple life, Women Who Lived and Loved North of 60 is a captivating read, as well as being a unique and highly recommended contribution to personal and academic Woimen's Studies collections. Midwest, April 2003
