From the Prologue
The year was 1809, and at twenty-two years of age, Andre Raphael de Javon was starting out on a new life.
Someone had spotted land. Hearing the call Andre rushed up the ladder to the open deck. Yes, there is was, the outling of the city.
Andre leaned against the railing and, taking a deep breath, filled his lungs with the sweet fresh air. With his eyes closed, he turned his face to the sky. The warm sun was like a soft caress. The pleasant breeze ruffled his hair. Hair that was thick, wavy and dark brown, highlighted with a tint of auburn.
When he opened his eyes he could see the city more cleary defined. His gray-green eyes held a look of excitement and a hint of apprehension.
Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to find his new friend Charles du Fray standing next to him.
"Well, there she is, Andre," Charles said. "New Orleans, the most beautiful and exciting city this side of the ocean." He too gazed at the shoreline as it grew closer. "I am so pleased that you have agreed to settle in New Orleans. I know you will not be sorry."
"Well, since I know nothing about this new country fo America, and even less about your city, I fell I should settle where I knowat least one person--you."
