Excerpt
As Sarah knelt in the garden, her hands carefully pulling out the pesky weeds, she couldn't help but steal glances in Casey's direction. There was something comforting about having him nearby, working diligently on the fence. She smiled and carried on with the weeding, humming softly while she worked.
Her thoughts continued to stray to Casey. She’d never paid attention to other men before. She’d been so in love with Andy, that other men didn’t interest her. But he was gone, had been gone for over a year now. Casey was handsome, in a boyish sort of way. His green eyes contrasted with his brown hair, and freckles sprinkled across his nose. A closely clipped beard and mustache graced the lower part of his face. She didn’t usually appreciate beards on men, they were more of a food trap, but his was so well taken care of that she didn’t see his that way. It was actually more stubble than beard, if she were truthful. Like he needed a shave. It was a good look for him. Then there were the strong lips framed by the facial hair. For more than a brief moment this morning, she’d wondered what his lips would feel like. It had been so long since she’d been kissed. Her stomach had even fluttered with a mere touch of his hand!
She straightened and sat back on her haunches for a minute, watching him. He’d stripped his shirt off and was wrestling with replacing one of the posts. Muscles glistening with perspiration rippled across his back from the strain. Sarah swallowed and bent her head, returning to her task. She had no time for fanciful daydreams. He was here, working. He needed a place to live, and she provided it. Nothing more.
