The book is set in Dublin and divided into three parts. Part one is set in Dublin, 1981 to 1983. The second part is in 1997 and the final in real time.
In this part we are introduced to the main characters. There are approximately six in all.
The two main protagonists Wayne and Larry are aged ten. Their paths will cross many times over their lives accidentally and professionally but they will never guess at the effect each has had on their own lives.
The author is a criminal trial lawyer practising for close on twenty years. While he draws heavily on this experience, particulary in the court scenes, his aim is to show the system at work with all its human frailties.
The plot is subtle but intricate. We see the interaction of the characters at three different phases of their lives. These are interesting people with real lives and while the storyline is tight it is not at the expense of the characters.
Fr. Brendan a young cleric fresh and idealistic but whose downfall through arrogance and an unhealthy sexual predliction is inevitable.
Cora Jackson a strong matriarchial figure who declines late in life with alzeimhers disease. Larry is her nephew. She takes Fr. Brendan under her wing.
Paul Rooney a young barrister with a successful career ahead of him who ultimately becomes a High Court judge. He is doing fine until he thinks he knows all the answers.
Dick Roche, a brilliant detective who only cuts corners when is unavoidable and necessary to ensnare the guilty. In the beginning it was easy. Persisent offenders were bad. But as he moves up the ranks he wonders is that an over simplification.
