Similkameen Journey
the cold fingers of the similkameen
wander through mountains and forests
gathering pine bows and twisted limbs
from trees cracked in a winter embrace.
the snowfall can almost feel like a warm
blanket in comparison.
when you have nothing left to do
but sit huddled on top of your car as
the greedy cold fingers of the river try
to take you for a ride
a journey already taken when eyelids
ten pounds each lost to the hypnosis
of a white dash
then you can think about
how harsh nature truly is.
you look at the rising water and pull in
a little closer
waiting for rescue you know must come.
soon.
surrounded by ice crystal conifers
reaching up to the blue sky
all ou can hear is the thump of heavy snow
falling from cedars older than you’ll ever be
- intermingled with the irregular beat in your chest.
the moon is so full you can’t help but smile
thinking about other times
safer times.
and the air is so cold and crisp
making the lunar outline almost close enough
to touch
to take you away...

Available in January 2005, Elan, a Regina Weese Anthology Volume 1, contains poetry and prose by some of Canada's up-and-coming writers and poets. Regina Weese has been recognized globally for its outstanding content and newfound talents. The name of the magazine is taken from Margaret's Laurence's The Stone Angel. It is the name inscribed on the stone angel in the story and permission has been granted by the late author's family to use the name for this wonderful collection of Canadian talent.
