A small five-year-old child suffers a severe leg injury and her neighbor, Alice is her only hope of living beyond it.
The story begins at a small, cinder block house in the little quiet town of Munford. The young grandson, Glenn, is concluding his last segment of grass cutting. He cuts the mower off along side the porch where his Mama Dabbs has just stepped out carrying two of those six and one half ounce Cokes.
He makes himself comfortable in one of the two wooden rocking chairs and indulges in the ice cold drink observing and appreciating the ice crystals he can see floating in the bottle.
Conversation leads to a question from Mama Dabbs about what Glenn plans to be when he grows up.
Glenn makes several thoughts to himself searching for the right thing to tell his grandmother, while she waits impatiently for his response. He eventually decides to suggest to his grandmother that he wants to grow up to be a book writer.
Mama Dabbs is thrilled with the possibility of her grandson becoming an author. She becomes speechless as she ponders the idea. A tear can be seen in her eyes as she sits in deep thought of this revelation. She expresses great appreciation of this desire of her grandson and offers him his first story to write into a book.
Glenn realizes his effort to impress his grandmother has really gotten something serious started. He wants so much to not disappoint his grandmother, so he listens with great desire to not miss a word. His hopes are that he will one day really write this story.
