Tammy had been at home when the EMP struck, and assumed that they were having another brownout. Driving to a real estate appointment, Robert nearly rear-ended a truck in downtown traffic, and as other cars screeched to a halt, knew immediately that something strange had happened.
Having spent their whole lives on the islands, the Lius were no strangers to natural disaster. They had an emergency plan which called for meeting at home, which was sufficiently inland to avoid being caught in a tsunami and out of the way of any likely lava flows.
After two hours, Tammy decided to drive Robert’s old pickup truck to pick up her daughter at school. She was oblivious to the disaster until she encountered several streets blocked by stalled cars.
She managed to get a half-mile down one street when she reached a dead end.
Just as she began backing up, she was forcibly dragged out of the truck by three young men. Hooting at her, the men turned the truck around by ramming several cars and disappeared the way she had come.
