A moment later, Charlie’s attention was captured by a light that came on in the basement. He shifted around in his cramped position to get a better look through the window. It was difficult for him to see what was going on as the glass was hazed with years of dust, inside and out. He swiped his hand across the glass and squinted through the smear of dust. There, in the basement, was the librarian lady, old Miss Busby. She was stepping down from a short stool, apparently having just switched on the light bulb dangling at the end of a cord above her head. A moment later she was doing something Charlie had never seen anyone do before. He watched with rapt fascination and a great deal of curiosity. The woman, dressed in a dark-colored bathrobe, was standing at what appeared to be an old wooden workbench. She and the workbench were bathed in the stark light from the bulb still gently swaying above her. The rest of the basement was dark and shrouded in dancing shadows. Three books, one atop the other, were stacked at the end of the workbench. She grabbed the books, placed the stack in front of her and then reached down. Charlie couldn’t see what she was reaching for but when she brought her hand up she was holding a small white candle. She reached down again and brought up a box of wooden matches. She slid the box open, pulled out a match, struck it on the side of the box and lit the candle. Then she placed the candle atop the stack of books, tilted her head back and closed her eyes. To Charlie’s surprise, she seemed to be talking to someone. Charlie’s eyes scanned the rest of the basement to see who she was talking to but the only light was from the single bulb above the workbench. It was too dark to see much of anything else in the basement but it didn’t seem like anyone else was down there, at least as far as he could tell. What the heck is she doing? After a few moments, the old woman’s lips stopped moving. She lowered her head, blew out the candle and set it aside. Then she picked up the books and bent down behind the workbench. When she stood up again, the books were not in her hand. Then she reached down behind the workbench again and brought up a square shaped red can. Charlie immediately recognized the can. His dad had one just like it, only newer. His brow furrowed as he pressed his nose against the window, squinting harder to see as best he could through the hazy glass. What’s she doing with a gas can? “Charlie!” his friend’s voice cut through the still night air. “I give up!” he shouted. “Where the heck are you?” Charlie whipped his head around. The voice seemed very near. Probably just the other side of the ratty old thorn bush that was slowly taking over the back corner of the library. He thought about calling out to his friend to come see what he was seeing but he didn’t want the old woman to hear him. He turned his eyes back to the window and was startled by a flash of fire that burst up from behind the workbench. The sudden flash made him jump but the old woman seemed unconcerned. In fact, he thought, she seemed to be smiling. The height of the flame gradually receded and eventually disappeared behind the workbench. The old woman, hands on her hips, stood motionless for several minutes, watching the dark smoke rising from the dwindling fire. Again his friend shouted, louder, closer, not five feet from Charlie’s hiding place. “Charlie! C’mon! Where are you?” The old woman’s head snapped around. She looked up, her intense gaze focused on the window where Charlie sat stunned, staring back at her. Their eyes locked. Charlie gasped and held his breath. He couldn’t have moved if his life had depended on it. He was crouched, frozen, stiff as an ice cube. The old woman raised a finger, slowly wagged it back and forth and very slowly moved her head from side to side in silent communication, a warning to the boy outside the window. ‘You have seen nothing and you will tell no one’.

The Good Librarian is Very Good!
I'm a big fan of The Second Chance Limousine stories series and this novella is an excellent and very different addition to the series. This story has a spooky, paranormal, occult hook that grabbed me immediately. I'm really amazed at how unique each of these stories is. It's fun to dive down these different rabbit holes, you just never know what's going to happen.

The Good Librarian revolves around a potentially demonic book and a woman who has a long history with it. She was touched by the book's power as a child and has spent her whole life guarding it and fearing it. Until Halloween night, when a mysterious stranger from a distant land comes looking for it for deep, lifelong reasons of her own. The story plays around with what's really evil and what might be the lie. What unfolds is a trip!

Best Tale Ever!
Elderly Beatrice Busby's whole life is the Higginsville Community Library which is older and mustier than she is. She even lives in the old building on the second floor. The story revolves around an ancient book that she has hidden away in the basement so it won't bring harm to others- even if they simply touch the tome. The librarian deeply believes in "signs" indicating that God - and the devil - has plans for her.

Two teenage girls decide to pull a Halloween prank on Ms. Busby which would not turn out well for all concerned. They know, as well as the entire town knows, about the "devil book" hidden away in the library basement. Many said it is just an urban legend though some believe the tale. Ms. Busby burns books she deems "unfit" for Christian people.

Mariana, an old gypsy woman, arrives in town. She desperately wants that book since she has its companion and she's traveled the globe, seeking it for forty years. The time has come! Together, she believes, they hold the wisdom and knowledge of the Serpent of Eden- the story her father passed on to her and begged her to continue his search for it.

All trails lead her to Beatrice Busby, the town librarian, who thinks the gypsy woman is the devil in disguise. A fracas ensues and Beatrice ends up in a hospital. Then comes along - you guessed it - the Second Chance Limousine Service -to give Beatrice another go at trying to change the outcome of this strange, eerie, but totally enjoyable tale!

With all the twists and turns - the Gary Val Tenuta trademark - readers will never guess the surprise that's in store for them as they reach the end. And what an ending!
