CHAPTER 1. WHERE DO I BEGIN?
If you’ve picked up this book, you’re more than likely a beginning author who is writing a book, or someone who has just finished writing one. If so, congratulations! Writing is a worthy art, and finishing a book is a great accomplishment.
For many beginning writers, the thought of having to market their books can be terrifying, or in the best circumstances, a mystery. “What should I do first?” they ask. “Where do I start? Do I need to think about marketing before my book is ready to launch? How much will it cost to promote my book? What is the best way to promote it?”
I hear these questions often from authors who contact me about publicity services. Many authors don’t know what they want in the way of publicity, but they know they need to do some amount of marketing and publicity in order to sell their books.
This book answers some of the questions I’ve heard from authors in the course of my thirty-plus-year career as a book publicist. I’ve tried to organize each chapter in a logical sequence so that those topics that an author needs to address first appear early on, although there are some topics that can be important at both the end and the beginning--or even during--a book’s marketing life.
As you read this book, please remember that some of the topics discussed in these chapters will apply to you and your book, and some will not. Likewise, some of the advice regarding scheduling, budget, strategy, etc., may sound good to you, while some of it may not; book publicity is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.
My suggestion is to read each chapter (in any order you like--they are designed to read as stand-alone units) and see what sounds as if it might be a good fit for you and your book. If something doesn’t sound right to you, ignore it. The information listed in these chapters is here to help guide you and provide some insight into what I believe are the common practices of most book publicists, but none of what’s here is meant to be a hard-and-fast prescription for your own individual book publicity plans.
Rather, these chapters outline what I do in my business when I provide publicity services for my clients. The topics covered here contain information that has been honed after years of successful public relations work for fiction and nonfiction authors, and I offer it here to provide ideas about how you might want to publicize your book, or to help illuminate and illustrate those aspects of book publicity that you want to understand better.
So, let’s begin.
