From the dawn of history the well being and comfort of man has been dictated by the availability of energy resources. From the early fires in the caves utilizing leaves, logs and dry grass to the modern fuels and derivatives from petroleum , modern civilization has evolved into a dynamic society surrounded by all imaginable comforts.Thenergy resources so admirably developed through the ages have not been a part of the equation but the equation itself.
Warren Latham, an editor is shocked to find that Millie Karklins, a CIA executive and close friend, has been exposed as an undercover agent by a Washington columnist. It is rumored that this happened as retribution for an article written by Wilbur T. Karklins, Millie’s husband and former Ambassador. The article exposed the previous administration’s deliberate inclusion of a piece of misinformation in a policy speech that led to the Iraq invasion.
By accident, Millie and Rigoberto Fernandez, the Attorney General, in a visit to Vice President Chet Denny’s office, mistakenly receive a Computer Disc showing the features of a plot titled The Energy Plan that defines the way to control energy on a worldwide basis/ It also reveals current development work on a secret source that is supposed to replace most energy resources available on Earth.
The Plan is led by the Vice President, through an international Foundation named the Center for Hope and Humanity. The center disguises his real intention of controlling not only the existing sources of petroleum but also the new energy systems now under development.
It is clear that the Vice President would stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. This also explains the mysterious deaths and disappearances of prominent politicians and business leaders that had expressed their opposition to Denny’s plans. The old dictum about ‘you are either with me or against me’ had acquired a deadly realism.
These events coincide with the disappearance of Sandra, a State Department friend of Millie and Warren Latham, and sister of one of Denny’s security agents; she had come into possession of sensitive information about the Center for Hope and Humanity that compromised Vice President Denny. One of Denny’s agents is responsible for her disappearance.
Warren arranges for Millie and Wilbur Karklins to hide in New York under the protection of Professor Michelsen, a common friend, prominent academician and International Relations Consultant.. They are aware that the President, Ross Simonson, does not suspect that the vice president is involved in the Energy Plan, convinced that the Center for Hope and Humanity is devoted to energy research and other activities beneficial to the world community.
Warren contacts Doctor Armbruster at Walter Reed. They discover that an innocent looking solution if administered in few drops could cause immediate filibration of the left ventricle leading to heart beat stoppage. The solution, termed Defib was developed in Taiwan. Investigation of other mysterious deaths points to the vice president, who aided by two of his special security agents, has arranged for “heart attacks” at various levels of business and industry in the US and abroad.
All the time, the scientists at the Center for Hope and Humanity, have continued their work on the new energy source. The new source is simply the sun’s energy that, after considerable research and test work can be stored, regulated, transmitted and otherwise utilized in all those functions and activities supported by existing sources like petroleum, nuclear, coal, natural gas, wind energy, bio-fuels, solar energy, etc..
At Camp David, the president is informed of the Energy Plan and the key features of the plot devised by the Vice President. A number of measures are discussed and a general plan to prevent Denny from achieving his objectives is also sketched out.
At a reception in the White House, the appearance of Millie and Wilbur Karklins surprise everyone. Especially Vice president Denny. He leaves the reception claiming another engagement.
The driver of the official car is Will, Denny’s agent in disguise. On the way to the vice presidents home, he shoots him and, minutes later, by pure accident is himself killed by a couple of thieves.
President Ross Simonson is now free to undertake a major reform of the Center and to begin a worldwide movement to make sure that the new energy source, the sun itself, is available to every home in the world. Perhaps this way, he thinks, peace and progress will finally become the favorite choices in a suffering world.
And, yes, the sun’s energy can be managed. It makes great fuel and costs nothing!
