The phone was going to ring again. Sydney felt her sister growing more anxious with each second. Sam would devise a reason for calling, of course, despite the fact they covered every subject known to humankind during Sydney’s move from Savannah. All she wanted was bread, milk and a new toaster considering her old one fritzed out in a unique, albeit frightening manner. After the sparks and smoke cleared, she vowed to spend a couple of extra bucks on a better brand.
Sydney glanced at her Camaro’s clock. If Sam didn’t hurry, she’d be late for her usual phone call. Today’s conversation would be shorter than normal since Sydney’s ability to reason vacated the premises. Before leaving the apartment, she forgot her coat and now roamed downtown Atlanta in jeans and a hunter green sweatshirt. The attire was usually suitable for late autumn but not the icebox encompassing the city the last week.
She moved her cell phone closer to her hip. Sydney classified her sister as a textbook worrier. People would pay her to worry for them and she’d do justice by them, giving them their money’s worth. For the past few days, Sam fretted about Sydney’s move back to Atlanta. The crime, the traffic, finding a safe apartment in a decent part of town, the cost of that safe apartment, the people she’d interact with… “You just never know” was Samantha’s attitude.
Sydney never truly understood the sheer volume of worries there were in life – probably because her sister relieved her of such burdens and agonized over them on her behalf.
Her sister proved correct on one important subject. Travis Shaw. He was something to worry about. Sydney fell for his charm and unwitting smile only to languish emotionally because of his runaway mouth. Had she known Travis suffered from a debilitating case of superiority complex, his days in her life would have been numbered. Sydney’s highly anticipated promotion to senior editor at Fantasy Publishing, a romantica publisher, registered as a mere yawn with her boyfriend. Once he learned she accepted the job in Atlanta, he laughed, saying, “What they need is an FBI raid, not to promote women to a higher degree of immorality.”
With that, she snatched his Wall Street Journal, whacked him upside the head with it and ordered him out. Logan Calhoun never would have insulted her job – or her. He prided himself on being a gentleman and Sydney could vow he was.
