Just when Savannah is ready to accept Ennis’s proposal, he suffers a gunshot wound that leaves him fighting for his life. She is forced to deal with her emotions while battling the old urge to drink. Making matters worse, her nemesis, Jenny Lee Crawford arrives in town to claim Ennis as her own – again.
Things digress when Ennis’s shooter is arrested and Savannah ends up on the wrong end of an Internal Affairs investigation. Throughout the whole ordeal, she struggles to keep her job, her sanity, and most importantly her fiancé so they can finally walk down the aisle.

“George and Martha Washington,” Ennis began.
“Ginger Rogers and her five ex-husbands,” Savannah volleyed back.
“Rosa and Raymond Parks. Nearly forty-five years.”
“Zsa Zsa Gabor and Felipe De Alba. Nearly twenty-four hours.”
Ennis sighed. Savannah knew she was winning again – and so did he. The mention of marriage summoned a debate over success or failure every time. She loved Ennis with all her heart but marriage presented a portent of hell for her, at least in her own mind. For basically a year and a half, she and Ennis shared their lives as partners on the Atlanta Police Department. Spending days (and plenty of nights) together on the job, the two detectives naturally grew closer until six months ago when they promoted their relationship to lovers as well. It didn’t matter to her that he was younger by three years at an energetic, well muscled twenty-seven. The age difference also neglected to dampen his enthusiasm. In truth, it inspired him to romance her and attempt to sway her to his way of thinking. One thing about Ennis Rutherford: his passion for her far outweighed his common sense. That’s why marriage talk inevitably ended in a tug of war that she always won.
Savannah knew if they ever wedded, their partner days were over. The department split married cops into two different locations. She didn’t want her or especially Ennis assigned to a bad part of town.
To her, life was good single. With Ennis basically living with her, they enjoyed all the perks of matrimony without the threat of divorce. What she feared most – Ennis eventually falling out of love with her. She was difficult to live with, she realized that so when she thought too long or hard about accepting his proposal, the vision of Ennis walking out the door stopped her cold. Marriage invited trouble, starting with discontent and ending in divorce. Bottom line, she couldn’t bear to lose Ennis – in any respect.
Behind the wheel of his Dodge Ram, Ennis contemplated her response then accused, “You made that up. Zsa Zsa and who?”
A smile crossed her face, “See? Shortest marriage in history.”
“Okay, how about Ronald and Nancy Reagan?”
“Ennis, find someone other than presidents who stayed married. It’s a no-brainer. Presidents stay married because it’s good for their image.” He’d begun this curious banter as they pulled away from the police station to go home. Since progress was slow on their current case, they decided to call it a day, grab a burger and go home. They weren’t but five blocks from their favorite restaurant when Ennis blurted, “Morticia and Gomez Addams. As Gomez said ‘I would die for her. I would kill for her. Either way, what bliss.’”
Savannah’s expression questioned his sanity, “Number one, don’t joke about dying. Number two, I thought we were staying with real people. I’m revoking your next choice of June and Ward Cleaver so here’s my response. Romeo and Juliet.”
Her partner let out a belly laugh. Amused, Savannah watched Ennis double in the seat. Had it been anyone else, she’d have flown mad, but this was her darling Ennis, title-holder to “sexiest male in existence”. Whether talking, laughing or murmuring sweet nothings in her ear, she loved hearing his deep tone roll like soft thunder.
After several seconds, he regained his composure but only barely, “You’re slipping and changing the rules. Romeo and Juliet weren’t even married.”
“They were planning on it, though.”
“The rules were people who were actually hitched. So,” he drew an imaginary line in the air, “chalk one up for me. I’m gaining on you.”
