The family is trapped in a blizzard with escaped murderers.
Savannah’s family, along with Georgia and Dane, head to Texas for a well deserved vacation. When they arrive Jake starts their trip wrong when he announces he’s engaged. It isn’t that he’s getting married, it’s who he’s marrying. To make matters worse a snowstorm originally forecasted to be a brief inconvenience grows into a historic blizzard that cripples the area. The Rutherford Ranch becomes a temporary refuge for more than a stranded individual or two, including a group of convicted murderers who escaped a prison and are on the lam. Time is running out for the family to save themselves from the men holding them against their will.

“I’ll kill him,” Ennis vowed.
“He’s your brother,” Savannah tried reasoning with her husband. “You can’t kill him.”
After their day she really wanted rest. Exhaustion set in from long hours in crowded planes plus layovers and the forty mile drive from Amarillo to the Rutherford Ranch outside Ennis’s hometown Vega, Texas. They’d visited with family and finally retired to the guest house for the night. Now they were dressed in their pajamas and ready for bed – or so she thought.
Ennis paced in front of the bed, raking a hand through his dark hair that already looked unkempt from previous rakings. He mumbled all manner of fitting ends to his youngest brother. None of them meant for children’s ears. It relieved her that their two girls, Lily (on the cusp of five) and Anna (three) slept in the bedroom next to theirs and away from his grumblings.
Her normally sedate, levelheaded spouse stopped long enough to meet her gaze. He did not appear sedate or levelheaded. For a fleeting instant she questioned if he was even her spouse because the smile crawling across his face shook a shiver down her spine. “I can’t?” he repeated. “There’s a lot of acreage to this ranch, sugar. I can hide a body on it somewhere.” He began rattling off viable places to do just that.
Savannah gave a mental eye roll. She refused to trifle over semantics – can’t kill him, shouldn’t kill him, and for God’s sake, don’t kill him. It shouldn’t require a refresher course from his thirty-nine-year-old detective sergeant wife (to a fellow homicide detective who was supposedly a mature thirty-six-year-old adult) on the drawbacks of committing murder. The long prison sentence should have been enough deterrent, not to mention that pesky Commandment stating Thou Shalt Not Kill. She assumed God hadn’t meant it as a suggestion.
She felt safe for the night though. Considering they were a quarter mile down the road from Jake, she kinda doubted Ennis would traipse that far in his jammies to drag his brother into the night and follow through. Plus, she’d say, remember I’m six months pregnant with your son so try reexamining the concept of “role model” before losing your mind entirely please.
She rubbed her forehead with a sigh, her vision passing across the clock that read the unholy hour of half past midnight. Considering they crawled out of bed at four that morning, this jet lagged pregnant woman needed some sleep before talking her husband out of committing murder. “It’s late and we’re tired. Let’s get some shuteye and plot a murder tomorrow.”
To emphasize her wishes, she climbed in bed and threw the covers over her hips. Flannel PJs or not, the March nights got cold in the Texas Panhandle – but thanks to Ennis’s anger, the temperature rose to the point she nearly broke a sweat. “Come to bed, Evil Genius.”
He did. Begrudgingly. Problem was he had a good point about Jake. The days of family harmony (such as they were) were kaput thanks to Jake’s news. News that let hours tick by without sleep. One o’clock. Two. Two-thirty. She couldn’t stop replaying the day that began innocently enough when they picked up her older sister Georgia and brother-in-law Dane (Georgia’s hubby and Ennis’s older brother) for their flight from Atlanta to Dallas. After a connecting flight to Amarillo in quite possibly the smallest turboprop plane known to the civilized world, Ennis’s oldest brother Cal chauffeured the group to the ranch in his wife’s Yukon. After greeting the family – all except Jake who was gone – they sat down to supper. When Jake finally arrived, everything went straight to hell…
