Erin Kasey lives the life only girls would dream about. In front of her mom, she's Erin-squeeky-clean, appropriate, smart, mature, ambitious, and demure. In front of her friends, she's Elisha. And Elisha does what she wants, when she wants... Double Identity is a contemporary coming-of-age novel, intended to serve as a positive message of honesty and responsibility, while reflecting the realities of adolescence.
Excerpt
It’s 6:30 a.m. and the last thing I wanna do is get up! O God! Here it comes…
“Erin! It’s time to get up!” yells my mom in her sing-song voice. I roll over in bed. She yells again. This time, it’s the strict voice saying you better get up or things will get ugly.
I shout, “Yes mom!”
What I really felt like shouting was, “I heard you the first time! So please shut up! And would you mind not using that stupid sing-song voice?! Damn!” Of course, not only would that give me a slapping that would leave my face blue and swollen for a week, but it would also ground me for a year! So I reluctantly rise up out of my bed and trudge to my closet. I pick out one of the dresses my mother would absolutely love! Me? I hate it!
One shower later I enter the kitchen to find my mom packing her stuff.
“Why, don’t you look nice,” She says with a smile on her face.
“Thanks mom.”
“Now you enjoy your breakfast. Have a good day in school. And…make good decisions.” Ugh! How annoying! She ALWAYS says that! I keep my cool and say in a calm, collective and cheerful voice,
“Don’t I always?” We laugh and she pecks me on the head.
“Yes you do. Good bye sweetie, love you!”
“Love you too!” I say as she walks out the door. Good! I never thought she’d leave! I glance at my watch. 7:35.
“Only 20 minutes!” I say to myself and rush up to my room.
There, I pull from my bed drawer, a tight red tank top, tight black bootie shorts, black high heels, and a black sweater (to wrap around my waist when teachers are around, covering my ‘way too short’ shorts). I take off my tacky dress, put on my hot outfit and race to my mirror to apply make-up (after retrieving it from my locked safe-you see, I’m not allowed to wear make-up). When done, I stare at myself in the mirror. I can only think of one word as I look at myself-green eyes, black wavy long hair, sexy outfit, and awesome make-up: HOT! I stop musing about myself when the bus driver honks. I run downstairs, through the kitchen, picking up a pear on the way, then out to the bus before it pulls away.
