A melodramatic dictator from another dimension is coming to this world. She’s bringing an army, a plan, and...her worst enemy?
Reina and Braeden were born on the same day, at the same time. They come from opposite ends of the spectrum of their world, Braeden the spoiled son of the eccentric dictator Desdemona, and Reina the daughter of two humble members of the Resistance fighting a losing battle against Des’ control. A mild case of insanity led the members of the Resistance to declare Reina their Chosen One, and from then on she was trained to finish their war for them.
Over the next eighteen years Reina and Braeden, who was assigned to deal with the Resister nuisance by his mother played cat and mouse, dancing around the ultimate goal that was forced upon them: to destroy each other and decide the victor of the war that was already lost.
When Des decides to take her dominion to another dimension Reina is invited along for several reasons that Des keeps to herself. Not willing to allow another world to fall to dust, Reina accepts.
But what happens when Braeden decides to revolt in a spoiled act of rebellion against his mother, and an “Earth Two” family worms their way into Reina’s heart, will she be able to save them all?
Excerpt
Yeah, hi, I’m Reina, and I guess I’m just your average girl…well, maybe not your average girl, seeing as yours clearly isn’t my dimension…then again, there aren’t many girls left in my own world, so I guess I’m not average here either. Basically, I just lied to you. Sorry. Let me explain. On my side of the continuum, we don’t have it so hot. This dictatorial woman named Desdemona decided she wanted our world for herself—an idea that I’m sure isn’t so foreign to your world either, I guess. But the difference here was: she actually did it.
Don’t get me wrong, people did try to fight back. Once Desdemona’s tyranny was recognized, the Resistance was formed and my parents joined. They were inconvenienced when mom suddenly got pregnant with me for no apparent reason, but the honeymoon had long since ended for my parents when Desdemona began her takeover, and it was still five years after that my mom got pregnant. This went over brilliantly with the rest of the Resistance. Having been excommunicated for far too long, and, in my opinion, having gone completely loony, they decided that I would be the Chosen One. Chosen to do what has yet to be seen, but they named me Reina, meaning “Pure,” nonetheless. Turns out, that my mother’s conception was most likely due to radiation and pollutants in the water, but now I’ve got this whole destiny thing on my shoulders while I did my best to lead a force of adult Resisters at the age of seventeen. Fair, huh? I didn’t think so.
Anyway, as soon as I could walk (which was about six months after I was born, thanks to the Resisters rushing me), I learned to run, and then talk within another month of that. I think I got a utility belt for my first birthday. Multiply all that progress by seventeen years, and it’s pretty obvious that I’m well trained. There’s no need to be modest there.
Perhaps it’s also worth mentioning that Desdemona bore a son at the exact same time that my mother had me. This, of course, didn’t help the idea that I am the Chosen One disappear, especially since Desdemona had no husband, making her pregnancy equally as mysterious as my mother’s. Her son’s name is Braeden, and he is my arch rival. I don’t know if that would have happened naturally or not, but we never really had a choice except to be enemies, seeing as our families were.
And, of course, when Des caught wind of my birth and what I was supposed to become, she began teaching Braeden how to kill me, and I was taught the same for him. I spent my entire life with the world as my classroom and Brae’s destruction as my ultimate goal. Really “pure” huh?
You’d think after being brought up to the beat of the conformist drum, I wouldn’t consider questioning what I was being taught, but that’s when my parents stepped in. They had kept each other sane despite the corruption of the desperate Resistance. They taught me never to stop questioning, which is how I’m surviving without them.
That’s right, they’re dead. All the Resisters are now. The only people left are the ones who initially submitted to Des’s new world order, and me. Come to think of it, I think the ancient people had a name for Des: Antichrist. That’s exactly what she is. Well our Revelation is over, and evil won in this place. No one disappeared in the proverbial blink of an eye because no one here had a religion, but maybe it’s time we did. I’ve been doing some research of late in the ancient libraries. Not that it matters anymore. Des is moving on. She’s done here because she can’t possibly cause any more devastation than she already has, and there just aren’t enough people left to satisfy her lust for power over the masses. You know what that means? She’s coming for you. Scared? You should be.
But don’t worry. The Chosen One is coming to help you. I’ve got gadgets, I’ve got brains, I’ve got nothing left to lose…and I’ve got an invitation.

The Resistance is an engaging read. Throughout the pages of her compelling fantasy/sci-fi thriller, author KristaLyn Vetovich takes the reader on a mind-bending journey across time and space, featuring everything from heroic efforts to hope-crushing destruction to the climactic throes of battle. In her fantastical retelling of the classic tale of good vs. evil, Vetovich paints the portrait of a valiant protagonist at war – both within herself and with the circumstances that define her existence – ultimately proving impossible to predict just how Reina’s actions will impact her own fate, as well of that of the world she inhabits. An enjoyable tale.
