Where do I start? Fairytales are for kids, until they get old enough to realize that not all fairytales come true. I am not bitter or the type of woman who does not believe in happy endings, they do happen just not to women like me! Barely graduated high school and became pregnant immediately! I guess you could say that I was looking for love in all the wrong places but some how I managed to look to the same man for all five of my kids. Now how many single mothers can say that? Not that it’s anything to brag about but in that area I did well…
Still life happened and it became too much for me to bare, don’t get me wrong it didn’t happen all at once but when the wall came tumbling down it crumbled right on top of me.
I am Kayia Washington a 38 mother of five children one damn near grown, two teenagers and three small kids under the age of 5 ; Justin, Melissa, Tre and Tracey the twins and Jeremiah my one year old.
Now Justin my 2o year old was just like his father a lazy good for nothing bum and even though I fought hard to turn him another way somehow he turned out the way he did. Melissa was my 16 year old who never gave me a moment of trouble and when the little ones came after her she was happy to help out. The twins who were now 4 were in pre-school a girl and a boy who were definitely double trouble when they wanted to be, my pregnancy with them caught me off guard but I did what I had to do. Now Jeremiah my chocolate baby with those big bambi eyes he was my quiet baby, always watching the other kids run around screaming acting like a bunch of heathens.
I worked a fulltime job at the cleaners had been there for 13 years now and it looked as if I would be there 13 more because living in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina was no joke! Yeah they said there were better paying jobs but as usual there is always a catch. I took everything in stride the best that I could and managed to create a nice home for me and my kids. Now Justin Sr. would come tramping around when he need to burst a pipe and me being comfortable with him allowed him to enter my bed whenever he felt the need which was not often but he always left me with a remembrance of him. I decide after Jeremiah to get my tubes tied it just didn’t make sense to keep having kids for a man who didn’t think that I was good enough to be his wife, being a baby mama was for those young girls not a woman my age. I battled depression for years and here in 2011 it finally caught up to me, I my mind I needed a break, just a place to go and rest for a few months then I could come back and be a better mother to my kids. I would think about the best way to get a break like that but some of my thoughts were even crazy to me. Until that morning on the way to work, when I figured out the best way and that was to get checked in on the 3rd floor of University Hospital! Since I didn’t have medical coverage I would have no other choice. I even visited that floor in the hospital on several occasions to make sure that I would be comfortable there. And unless something new and refreshing entered my life that’s exactly where I was going to be that was until I met Tara…
She was a kind woman who would come into the cleaners and always had a nice word for me. She smiled at me often but I just took it as a smile until Ming Lee informed me that she was a lesbian. Afterwards I began to pay more attention to her when she came in and even made sure that I took the time to look extra special. Not that I was interested in women I never really thought about it until now. Still something about her sparked an interest and she must have been interested too because today she asked me out for cocktails after work and I accepted.
