Scott Richards suddenly awakes in a strange room with his memory a total void. His first tentative steps outside his motel room is in the search for his identity which leads him to the motel bar. After his eyes have adjusted to the dim lighting, an uneasy acquaintance is forced on him by an ape like man sitting on the bar stood next to him by the name of Jack Slate. He explains he has created a fortune in a construction empire he single handedly created which now unfortunately is on the verge of financial collapse. In only a short time in the bar, Jack is able to perceive, as he has done with each member of his management team, that Scott is the salvation of his empire, and with many misgivings, allows Jack coerce him into his employment.
