Devin loomed over her shoulder, filling the doorframe. Handsome as a boy, he'd matured into a real heart-stopper. Too bad nobody else could see him. He dropped by from time to time, and his presence usually comforted her. He compensated for her missing family, although she didn't need his protection anymore. He'd whipped Emery enough times her bullying cousin was terrified of touching her. A shame, she thought sometimes, Devin wasn't real. He was so perfect, so good to her. Maybe he'd spoiled her to human men who came with flaws and old attachments and didn't stay around forever.
She mustered a smile for him, happy she wasn't totally alone tonight. “I was wondering where you'd gone to,” she said aloud. “It's been months since I've seen you.”
“Is that why your eyes are so bright, Love? From thinking about me? Or your new tenant?” Still bristling with boyish energy, he toyed with the light switch, making the light flash off and on.
“Stop that, please. I really like him, Devin. It's been so long since Rick, maybe I don't know how to act around men anymore.”
“You seemed to be managing.”
“Not as I wanted to.” She rubbed night cream on her face.
“Is that why you stopped short of telling him everything?”
Her smile crumpled into a frown. “So you're my conscience now too? And why are you sneaking around without showing yourself?”
