As the chase continued, Heather was amazed that the deer didn’t veer off the trail into more secluded areas. Perhaps this lovely animal was
enjoying the game just as much as she and Frosty.
Whatever the reason, the game continued until the deer entered what appeared to be the same field where they had started the chase. It was hard for
Heather to tell for sure as the fog prevented her from seeing more than twenty feet ahead of her.
Without any urging, Frosty continued to follow the deer at a fast pace through the field. Galloping to the far end, where the trees once again met the
field, the deer jumped through a thicket of bushes and instantly disappeared. Frosty would have
crashed through the bushes had it not been for Heather, who pulled tight on the reins. The mare raised her head high and opened her mouth, trying
to evade the tight pressure of the bit, and was forced to stop.
“I think that’s enough, Frosty. I can’t see the deer any more and there’s no trail here. I think we lost her.”
Heather turned her mare back in the direction they had come. Frosty was huffing and puffing from the early morning workout and was now happy to be walking. As they took several strides,
Heather slowly looked around her. The fog was thick and unrelenting. There was no trail to follow, no human voices or horse whinnies in the distance. Heather suddenly couldn’t tell from
which direction they had come. Then she realized...they were lost!
