Losing Your Virginity Is Easy If You Are Already “Sexually Hot”
Sometimes it’s not easy to keep control of your emotions. When you’re around good-looking young men and your sexual drives are driving you crazy because you’re trying to maintain those “BIG 3,” it can be challenging. Your body’s natural hormones start kicking in and you start having sensations you’ve never experienced before. These sensations are letting you know that if you give in to them, something more wonderful than eating mama’s homemade peach cobbler loaded with rich vanilla ice cream is about to jump off.
Arnold Townson, my first real boyfriend, was from Belize. He was a
student with me at the prestigious Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. In my mind and in his, having sex before marriage was out of God’s plan for any good Christian; but there was nothing at all wrong with holding hands, walking with your arms around each other’s waist, and having a little sanctified kiss at the end of a date. However, the problems came when that innocent kiss turned into deep tongue kissing on the landscape of what we thought at the time was as close to a secluded hallway as you could ever hope to find on a totally Christian campus. That kiss was so good. I still remember the sensations of it almost 45 years later. That kiss did not lead to petting but there was some necking.
According to Encyclopedia.com, in the broad use of the term, pet-
ting includes all types of sexual activity except intercourse. Light petting includes hugging, gentle touching, or rubbing of the partner’s skin and erogenous (a sensitive area on the body that causes sexual arousal when it is touched) area, kissing, and necking; but it does not include touching of genitals or touching underneath clothing.
I was so scared that I was going to lose my battle to keep the “BIG 3,” and worst of all the devil was tempting me to not fight back because of my inward struggles with feeling unattractive to men. Thank God, the Holy Ghost did step in just in time for me to know how to respond to Arnold’s “It’s okay, I know how far I can go without going all the way.” He may have known his limit, but I’d already gone far beyond mine. The moment he started with the necking I knew that I would be having an all-night one on one prayer meeting with God. I’d be crying out for forgiveness with true repentance to the Lord for going as far as I had gone.
Although there were several other incidents I could reference that make the point that it was not easy to stay a virgin and that somehow God owed me for keeping my purity in check before I got married, I’ll just mention one more situation.
I remember being engaged to Spencer Jones. The night before we were to be married, he came by the house to pick me up. When we left my mom’s house, I knew I wouldn’t be out too late because the next day we would be getting married; and tradition said that it was bad luck to see your spouse on the same day of the wedding. We wanted to spend some time together celebrating our last day of singlehood. Just around the corner there was a little factory which was closed for the evening. You can imagine, all our expectations of an awesome honeymoon were about to come true. In less than 24 hours we were literally going to be able to let it all hang out. We had made it through the biggest part of the “BIG 3,” or at least we thought we had. Then something happened as we shared that last kiss of single-hood. When Spencer took me in his arms, out of nowhere a huge forest fire was set ablaze. I said to myself, “Kathy, you better hurry up and stop this.” Then I heard those words that I had heard before from others when we were near the point of no return. You know the words. “Don’t worry, I know my limits and I won’t let nothing happen.” The only difference between now and the other times I had heard similar words was that these words were coming from Spencer’s mouth, the person who was committed to marrying me the next day. There we were: saved, sanctified, filled with the Holy Ghost, not smoking, cursing, drinking or hanging around those that do; but in an unexpected moment of unknown weakness, Satan wanted us to lose our testimony, to lose our victory, and to lose our virginity. But for what? For an unanticipated moment of hot passion. I think not! Thank God for a literal door of escape. I mean, I opened the car door and escaped for a cooling down breath of air. Thank God for the Holy Spirit, who always causes us to triumph when we resist the devil’s temptations.
Just because you’re saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost, that does not mean you do not have the same desires that people who are not saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost have. Because you are a Christian, that doesn’t mean God owes you just because you did what was right.
I guess that’s the background of why I felt like God owed me something. Because it seemed like all through my high school years I was getting into situations that tempted me to want to go beyond my Christian limitations. I prayed a lot, fasted a lot, and tried to do the things that would keep me out of those types of situations. I guess you could say that when I finally got married, it was a miracle, because I really didn’t love my husband like a woman should love a man before saying “I do,” and definitely before walking down the aisle. All I knew was that GOD had said Spencer was to be my husband. I also knew I didn’t want a marriage like my mom and dad’s marriage—a marriage that was filled with uncertainty, anger, unfaithfulness, alcohol, and verbal abuse—a marriage that would send any child running to hide in their bedroom behind a closed door to wait until it was safe to come out, always hoping and praying to find the mom we all loved was okay.
