Children: Everybody wants them until nobody wants them. The truth is they are either our rich vanilla ice cream over that fabulous dark chocolate brownie or they’re our “I can’t sleep GAS” at night after eating too many of our favorite beans and not enough cornbread. We want them when we’re ready for them, and even when we secretly wish they were someone else’s child. We want them when they make us proud, and we don’t want them when their voices become deep and they get loud. We want them to want us, when wanting us is far from what they want or need. We want them to make us proud by winning that third grade spelling bee and to become the MVP football quarterback in the most prestigious university around.
We want them after we’ve achieved all our own personal goals and we’ve become financially stable enough in our eyes to have them. We want them even if we thought we waited too late to have them, or the doctors advised us not to have them. We want them to love us, and we want others to love the fact that we wanted them even when they don’t understand why in the world we weren’t smart enough to wrap it up or at least to pop a pill to keep from getting pregnant. We want them when we secretly don’t want them, but they are here!
When it comes to raising children, timing is especially important! In fact, when we look back, we are not sure how they got here (yes, we know how!), but this one thing we can be sure of: they are ours from the cradle to the grave.
