As the rain pelted his face and chains of white light flashed above him, Ron Piper begged for his life. "Please man, oh God, don't do this. You don't have to. I won't tell anyone, I swear man. You got my word, I'll never tell. You gotta believe me." Piper bowed his head to escape the relentless sting of wind-whipped rain while he sobbed. The deck of the boat pitched another fifteen degrees as eight foot waves of black water crashed against her bow.
The shadowy figure of his tormentor never stopped working. Piper's legs and ankles bled where the leather straps bit into his skin, binding him to the three concrete blocks piled at the deck's edge. For what seemed hours, but were mere minutes, Piper looked on with horror as the bonds were placed.
Piper's brain screamed, “This can’t be happening!” He shivered in fear before renewing his plea. "Please, please, man, I swear, you don't have to worry about me; I'll never say a word."
The figure spun. Lightning lit his face. "You don't get it, do you? The doc trusted you. All he did was try and help. You could'a had it all. A simple job was all you had to do. You should'a trusted him but you didn't. You're a traitor. Now you gotta pay." The dark form turned back to his task.
"I couldn't do what he asked. It was wrong."
The figure whirled and sneered. "Wrong? What do you know about wrong? The doc only tries to help but always gets hurt. He asked you to help set things straight."
The emotional explosion ended as abruptly as it began. As the heat of anger passed, the form sat back. Momentarily drained, he stared blankly at Piper.
Mesmerized by the intensity of the outburst, Piper couldn't help himself, "What?"
"Didn't you learn nothin'? He only tries to protect us. Hell, man, that's all he's ever been about, protecting us from them."
In Piper’s final moments the clarity struck him like a train. It was hopeless. Like one of the Manson clan, his killer blindly followed the will of another. With his life hanging in the balance, he made one last try. "I swear man, you let me go, I'll never say a word to anyone. You don't have to worry about me."
The shadow stood looking down on him as lightning danced in the clouds above. Piper caught a glimpse of the wicked grin. The form spoke with an eerie calm, "I'm not worried. You're right. You're not going to tell anyone anything."
Piper’s head turned. In slow motion he watched the polished toe of the combat boot rise off the deck and move toward the blocks. Slowly, it pressed down. Thick layers of polish cracked under the pressure and forced the blocks the final inches and over the side. Piper’s fingers dug desperately at the deck trying to get a grip.
Skin tore from his knuckles and blood streaked the deck as he slipped over the side with a piercing scream silenced by the water as it engulfed him.
The last image etched in Ron Piper’s mind was the face of the dark man, smiling as he watched Piper sink deeper into the black depths and disappear.
