Excerpt
Seth wiped his brow, drawing a breath. Jesus! He hated those frickin things—them and the bears! How many years in the future until they’d go extinct? Soon, he hoped. His eyes were drawn to Geena. She lay as if dead. His heart constricted painfully. Jogging down the incline, he squatted beside her, afraid to touch, afraid to find out if she still lived. Steeling himself, he reached down and rolled her over. Her head lolled back, eyes closed, lips slack. He couldn’t tell if she was breathing or not. Her face beneath the caked blood and dirt was deathly pale, skin clammy and cold. She felt dead!
“Damn you, Geena!” His voice broke. He hugged her against his chest, rocking her limp form while he cried. Maybe if he’d gotten to her sooner! Damn it to hell! Damn this place and all the nightmares that existed here. How he wished he’d told her flat out “no” when she’d first tempted him to come. But it didn’t matter. She would have gone without him anyway.
He brushed a gentle hand across her face, wiping at the dirt. She was always so tough and full of shit. What he held was just the husk of the woman she’d been. He was too late. He kissed her cheek. I won’t let them get you, he promised.
Her eyelashes fluttered, her mouth closed.
