The tangy smell of antiseptics and cleaning fluids assaulted Kadin’s olfactory nerves. He grimaced, wrinkling his nose at the pungent odor. He was unused to the offensive smells inherent in the more primitive cultures. The Songres’ sensory perceptions were highly evolved—sometimes too evolved. He tried holding his breath but his host had to breathe. The bitter smell permeated the long hallway, the same hallway the attendant at the front desk indicated led to the ICU where she informed him Tannis, or the female Jenn, would be.
He grinned. He already knew her location but his ploy of humanness needed to be acted upon. Besides, the ruse might waylay Tannis’ fears and gain him entrance into her confidence. He directed his energy towards the ICU, touching on the minds of the individuals currently in attendance.
A young male was at the nurses’ station when he arrived. Kadin flitted through his thoughts picking out those he would need.
“Can I help you?” the male asked, his attitude friendly but professional.
“I’m here to see Jennifer Weaver. I was told she’s in ICU.”
“Are you a relative?”
“I’m the one who called for the EMT’s last night. I saw the crash.”
The young man frowned. “I’m sorry. We only allow relatives into ICU and only for short periods of time.”
The male was speaking the truth as he knew it. A minor problem he hadn’t anticipated. He sent out a thought, brushing the young man’s mind.
The blue eyes blanked for just a moment, the forehead creased in confusion, but the subtle push worked. “If you wait a few minutes, I’ll see if you can step in.”
