Time travel romance, cowboys, Indians and wagon trains and the locket was the key.
An antique ivory locket catapults Aimee Reynolds back to the year 1847. Alone in St. Louis, Missouri, she has to find a way to get home to present day Seattle. She needs a suitable male willing to marry her or be left behind when the emigrant train departs for the Oregon Territory.
Jake Marshall, scout for the Markham Party, is the perfect, if unwilling choice. Undaunted by his overt rudeness, Aimee entices Jake to the alter, promising her diamond earrings as payment for a marriage of convenience. Properly wed, she secures passage on the wagon train, and discovers her future may be in the past.

Jake scanned the campsite. “I don’t see anyone else here. Who do you think I was talking to?”
“I’ve never even touched the reins. How do you expect me to handle them without any experience?”
It wasn’t like driving a car or leading a dog by a leash, for cripes sake! Sometimes, it was all Nolan could go to keep control of the animals.
“It won’t be that hard today. I’ll get you in line and all you have to do is just keep them moving. They’ll follow the rest.”
Aimee coughed nervously. “What about you? Why can’t you do it?”
“I have to scout ahead. You can do it. It isn’t that hard.”
“I can’t do it,” she shrilled. “And if you make me, I’ll never talk to you again.”
“What am I supposed to do? I’m a scout, it’s my job.”
“How about one of Nolan’s brothers? Couldn’t one of them drive? Really, Jake, I have no idea what to do and if something scared the team, I couldn’t handle it.”
Shaking his head in disbelief, Jake snorted disgustedly. “Well, I guess today is a good day to learn!”
The last of the mules were hitched up and the horse tied to the back of the wagon. Jake climbed in and motioned for her to step up. Dragging her feet, feeling like she was the proverbial sacrificial lamb, Aimee unenthusiastically clambered up and settled herself next to him in the wagon box. Jake whistled piercingly and snapped the reins as the mules dutifully leaned into their collars, falling in behind the other wagons. Though she had ridden up front before, Aimee had never really noticed before how far down the ground looked from up here. Reaching into the wagon, she grabbed a kerchief, tying it over the lower part of her face as the dust kicked up; it would be worse than usual today, and because of their lateness getting started, they would eat dust all day long.
Jake handled the reins loosely and expertly, keeping the mules in line and moving with very little conscious effort. He almost made it look easy, but she wasn’t going to fall for that one. Nolan was an efficient muleskinner, but even he had problems with the team from time to time. Mules just weren’t the most placid creatures on the face of the earth.
